New boiler hand-hole door
Spring 2008

The outside shell of the boiler on the driver’s side has an access door to allow the fusible plug to be inspected. The fusible plug is a screwed hollow bronze threaded plug, with a core of a low melting point metal. It is mounted in the firebox of the boiler, the firebox being the steel enclosure which separates the water space and the fire space. The fusible plug breaks through this enclosure, the core metal being the seal between the two spaces. Normally it is below the level of the water in the boiler, the water keeping the core metal below its melting point. If the water level drops below the plug, the core metal melts, allowing steam and water under the pressure of the boiler into the fire space extinguishing the fire and protecting the structure of the boiler.

The hand-hole door was as far as we know an original item. It had got to a stage that while still safe to use, it did not look particularly ‘fit for purpose’. A new door, rolled to the radius of the boiler shell, was obtained from Chris Hutchinson, a spare he had bought for a series of boilers he was building. This door was machined to suit the slightly different sized hole by Forrest Precision and the hole in the boiler dressed to remove some corrosion. The new door was fitted with a new joint, and steam tested.
