Summerlee is the main base for the Waggon where it often operates alongside the museum's own steam roller and traction engine. The museum is built on the site of the former Summerlee Iron Works which originally opened in 1836 using the then newly-patented 'hot blast' process for the production of iron. The museum includes remants of the original works, interactive recreations of the site, and a great deal on Scotland, and in particular Lanarkshire's industrial heritage.
Included within its 20 acre site are:
· Scotland's only working electric tramway.
· A recreated addit mine (a mine entered by a sloping trackway, not a shaft).
· Miners' cottages showing living conditions from the 1840s to 1960s.
· Steam driven sawmill and timber shed.
· Main exhibition halls covering the iron and steel industries, transport, working conditions, strikes and life at home.
· Working machinery from local mines and factories, including the rebuilt Cardowan Colliery winding engine.
· Kids 'Discovery Zone' with hands-on experiments for fun and learning.
· Restored Summerlee branch of the Monklands canal.
· Guided tours of the mine, miners' cottages and other areas.
· Childrens outdoor playpark with everything from sandpits to flying trapeze
· Outdoor picnic areas.
· Cafe serving a variety of food from coffee and cakes to bites to eat.
The museum is run by North Lanarkshire Council, is open 7 days a week, with free entry and free parking. Further information is available on the museum's website and by phone on 01236-638460. It is located at Heritage Way, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, ML5 1QD.
The museum is supported by volunteers group 'The Friends of Summerlee', registered Scottish charity SCO 13795. The Friends provide opportunities to participate in and support the development of Summerlee through activities and events, and recently through the Friends Redevelopment Appeal to raise almost £0.5M in support of the museum's refurbishment. The Friends also assist in the maintenance, restoration and operation of the exhibits and working steam engines through Thursday evening and Wednesday / Friday daytime engineering groups, and represent Summerlee at events and steam rallies across Scotland. Further information on the Friends, how to join and how to support their work may be obtained on site or by contacting the museum.
