Changing to Newer Tyres
Spring & Summer 2008

The tyres are of an indeterminate age and history. Some are of a condition suitable to use, allowing for the limited mileage that we do each year. A couple were not. 4 re-treaded tyres complete with inner tubes were purchased from Chris Hutchinson. The two front tyres were changed, the remainder moved around to put good tyres on each wheel. This has also given us two spare used tyres.

The tyres are of what was a standard size of 24” diameter rim. This is the outside diameter size of the steel part of the wheel. The standard now is 22 1/2” rim. There is still one company that will manufacture tyres for a 24” rim. At approximately £1000 each, it would be an expensive replacement program! To move to the new standard rim size tyre, all the wheels would need to be replaced, with the probability that these would need to be made especially to suit. This would also be relatively expensive initially, but cheaper in the long run due to the availability of cheaper standard size tyres.
